Meta said that legs for avatars were one of the most requested features.
Along with the $1,500 mixed reality Quest Pro headset, Mark Zuckerberg announced another major VR update — avatars with legs.
The latest generation of “Meta Avatars,” which will be full-body VR avatars starting in Meta Horizon Worlds, was introduced on Tuesday by Facebook owner Meta.
Legs have been among the most requested items on our roadmap, and they have gotten a lot of attention, according to Meta.
Avatars in Meta’s virtual reality environments were formerly merely floating, disembodied torsos with limbs and heads.
During the keynote, an animated Zuckerberg was visibly delighted with the new function and his avatar was seen bouncing for pleasure.
In addition to virtual reality, Meta announced that it was introducing avatars to video chat, beginning with WhatsApp and Messenger, so users could react and express themselves without turning on their cameras.

The newest VR headset, which Zuckerberg unveiled on Tuesday, will allow users to interact with virtual items superimposed on their physical reality and will deliver high-resolution, full-color passthrough.
The launch is a significant milestone for Zuckerberg, who last year revealed plans for the device, code-named Project Cambria, at the same time that he changed the name of his company from Facebook to Meta to signal his intention to refocus the social media giant into a company that develops technology for the “metaverse.”
Zuckerberg has since poured billions of dollars into that vision. Reality Labs, the Meta unit responsible for bringing the metaverse to life, lost $10.2 billion in 2021 and has lost nearly $6 billion so far this year. On the bright side, Zuckerberg has his VR legs.
‘Seriously, legs are hard,’ Zuckerberg said during his Meta Connect VR conference on Tuesday. ‘Which is why other virtual reality systems don’t have them either.’
