Updates: Queen Elizabeth II, Britain’s Beacon of Stability, Dies Medical staff at Balmoral Castle, the queen’s estate in the Scottish Highlands, have the 96-year-old monarch under their care. Balmoral is where Prince Charles went to be by his mother’s side.

At 19:30 BST, Buckingham Palace published a statement announcing the news, following a statement earlier in the day regarding her failing health.

“The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon,” the message started. “The King and The Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow.”

This statement was taken very seriously because the Royal Family doesn’t often speak about the Queen’s health, even in recent years when she’s had several health scares. As a result, Queen Elizabeth II’s children flew up to Balmoral to see their mother.

OFFICIAL: 96-year-old Queen Elizabeth II passed away.
Queen Elizabeth II passed away at the age of 96, making it a sad day for the UK and the rest of the world. At 19:30 BST, Buckingham Palace made the announcement of the Queen’s passing.

“The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon,” the statement started. “The King and The Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow.”

 

The Queen’s children are all present at Balmoral.

All of the Queen’s children ate currently at Balmoral with their mother, according to ITV’s royal editor Chris Ship. He posted images of Sophie Wessex, Prince Edward, Prince Andrew, and Prince William’s arrival.

The death of my beloved Mother, Her Majesty The Queen, is a moment of the greatest sadness for me and all members of my family,” the new king, her eldest son Charles, said.

Charles succeeds to the throne of the United Kingdom and 14 other nations, including Australia, Canada, and New Zealand, upon the passing of Elizabeth. Our official name would be Charles III, according to his office.

“We mourn profoundly the passing of a cherished Sovereign and a much-loved mother. I know her loss will be deeply felt throughout the country, the Realms and the Commonwealth, and by countless people around the world,” the 73-year-old said in a statement.

When the queen’s doctors announced that she was under medical observation just after midday on Thursday, her relatives hurried to be by her side as word spread that her condition was deteriorating.

Since the end of last year, the queen had been experiencing what Buckingham Palace described as “episodic mobility issues,” which had forced her to cancel almost all of her public appearances.

Her last public duty came only on Tuesday, when she appointed Liz Truss prime minister – the 15th of her reign.

“The death of Her Majesty the Queen is a huge shock to the nation and to the world,” Truss said outside her Downing Street office where the flag, like those at royal palaces and government buildings across London, were lowered to half-mast.
